As a starting point, MTB riders should primarily look for the number of lumens on a bike light. This is due to the rider's need to be able to see much of the ground around and close to the bike. An uneven surface requires more attention and the speed is typically slower, so it's important to have a good spread of the light cone and focus on the amount of light rather than the intensity of the light.
