Speed Pedelec - Super commuter bike

The new Speed Pedelecs are approved on a trial basis in Denmark. This means that you can now ride these 45 km/h e-bikes as a regular bike on bike paths. If you have a long commute or want to get through town quickly, a Speed Pedelec could be for you.

Who should buy a Speed Pedelec?

Normal e-bikes can go up to 25 km/h, the new thing about a Speed Pedelec is that it can go up to 20 km/h without pedaling and up to 45 km/h if you pedal yourself. If you cycle many kilometers every day, a Speed Pedelec can be a great advantage. When you ride a Speed Pedelec, you can often get to your destination faster than if you drive a car in rush hour traffic. However, we recommend using a Speed Pedelec for longer distances where there is plenty of space on the road or cycle path.

What are the rules for riding a Speed Pedelec - and what precautions do you need to take?

Riding a Speed Pedelec also requires extra caution, similar to riding a road bike, so you need to be aware of the following when you're out on the trail and before you set off:

  • You must ride on the bike lane
  • Always wear a helmet when riding a speed pedelec
  • Always ride your speed pedelec with your lights on
  • You must not transport others when riding a speed pedelec
  • You must be at least 15 years old to ride a speed pedelec, and if you are under 18 years old, you must have a small moped license - or alternatively a B license (cf. the pilot scheme for acquiring a driving license for 17-year-olds)
  • The provisions of the Danish Road Traffic Act regarding insurance, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of mind-altering substances, illness, etc. also apply when riding a speed pedelec
  • You must at all times carry and be able to present a receipt for liability insurance that has been taken out and is valid
  • Watch out for cars coming from side roads, you can't be sure they will stop for you as they may not think you are coming at the speed you are.
  • Pay extra attention to potholes and bike lanes, as well as branches and loose gravel. At 45 km/h, hitting a pothole you miss could mean a crash
  • Before you set off, check tire pressure, as well as cracks and stones in tires. If there are pebbles in the tire, remove them, if there are cracks in the tires, replace them. Under-inflated tires can cause the bike to skid out of a corner, which also means that the tire can puncture more easily.
  • Check the brake pads on both front and rear wheels regularly, if the pads are worn, replace the pads
  • If part of your route is in the city, you must drive according to the conditions and take into account the road users who do not drive 45 km/h, so wait to accelerate until the road is clear.
  • Make sure to follow the recommended service intervals to ensure you always have the best driving experience.
