Back in 1921, Shozaburo Shimano established his very own company under his own name. The company supplied iron products to various bicycle companies, and soon Shimano grew at a rapid pace. Shimano was among the first companies to produce freewheel bicycle wheels, where the pedals are not inextricably linked to the wheel, as seen on Fixie bikes.Shimano quickly became a leader in components for freewheel bicycles, and with freewheels came the need for brakes and equipment. Here too, Shimano quickly became a strong player. Later, gears were added to the range and Shimano was among the first to produce internal gears.
