What is a Fixie/singlespeed bike?
Simply put, a fixie bike is a bike without gears. This means that unlike many other traditional bikes that have a collection of cogs, sprockets and other things at the rear wheel, the fixie bike is connected directly to the rear wheel. This is why a fixie bike is also known as a singlespeed bike. This is because the bikes have ONLY one gear. The word "Fixie bike" itself is a clever abbreviation for "Fixed gear bike". The Fixie bike has become incredibly popular here in Denmark, especially for city riding. You often see them in the cityscape, not only because they are light and simple, but also because fixie bikes represent the minimalist design that is popular here in Scandinavia. It is especially the concept of "Less is more" that attracts thousands of Danes to buy this type of bike.
For what purpose should I choose a Fixie bike?
As mentioned earlier, you should choose a Fixie bike if you cycle a lot in cities. This is because the bike only has one gear and therefore can't really be used for riding out in nature, including steep hills and the like. Fixie or singlespeed, the basic difference:
- Fixie has "Fixed-gear", which means that the pedals always follow the wheel. They are "Fixed together". So whether you're going backwards, slow or fast, the pedals follow, always. You can't stop them without the wheel stopping too.
- Singlespeed is a classic 1-speed bike. Your pedals aren't forced to keep up with the wheel, so you can relax downhill. It's a more normal style of cycling, but still only with one gear.
